BACK TO THE ROOTS – History & Manifesto
Where does Pride come from, and why does it still matter today?
Pride is not just a celebration. It is a space for protest, remembrance, and resistance. Back to the Roots was born from a simple need: to return to what truly matters. Pride started in the streets, from anger, joy, and solidarity. From the Stonewall riots to today’s struggles, it has always been driven by queer, trans, racialized, and marginalized people — those too often pushed aside or forgotten. At a time when transphobia is rising and LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack worldwide — anti-trans laws in the United States, transmisogynistic definitions of “woman” in the UK, the criminalization of Pride in Hungary, and ongoing violence and murders targeting our communities — celebrating Pride alone is not enough.
Back to the Roots is an antifascist, queer, and decolonial event where we raise our voices, affirm our existence, and resist together.
A Pride for those who are too often unseen
A space created first and foremost for LGBTQIA+ people facing multiple forms of systemic oppression: trans, lesbian, queer, racialized, precarious, migrant, disabled, and marginalized people, even within our own communities. Back to the Roots is for those who feel uncomfortable elsewhere, who don’t see themselves in Brussels Pride, and who have been excluded, silenced, or harmed. Coming together against patriarchy, racism, capitalism, ableism, and all forms of oppression is essential. Celebrating who we are is also a way of resisting the systems that oppress us.
A street celebration that resists
Back to the Roots is a street party, but not just that. It’s a moment of collective joy and political expression: queer and drag performances, DJ sets, workshops, activism, and sharing. We spotlight lesbian, trans, queer, and racialized artists, and reject rainbow capitalism. It also means refusing political hypocrisy and tokenization, and standing for a Pride that stays true to its values.
Why here, Rue du Prince Royal
This street is home to the Crazy Circle, the only lesbian, queer, and trans bar in Brussels, a safe, political, and community space. Holding this Pride here allows us to build a space by and for our community, where its realities and needs are truly centered. We want to offer a place where people can fully embrace their identities, speak up, and exist through art, activism, sharing, and creation. Being decentralized, smaller in scale, and organized with partners who listen to the needs of the community makes this possible. Supporting this Pride also means supporting a vital space for our communities.
Care is part of the struggle
Back to the Roots is committed to harm reduction and collective care: clear guidelines, consent culture, violence prevention, chill zones, free water, and safe keeping team. We aim to create a more intimate space, smaller in scale, but one that truly allows us to come together in meaningful ways.
